How I did that....
In reviewing the steps of my process here, remember that my purpose began as a practice study in values and shapes and was not intended to be used to achieve a final piece of art.
1. Looking only at values and shapes, I used a black & white photo (held upside down) as reference to paint this also upside down.

2. Turning the painting right side up, it is a recognizable, yet less-than-accurate depiction of the Statue of Liberty.

3. Much later, after receiving a Call to Artists for a non-judged show with the theme "Masks," I went through my stored art. Imagine what I discovered! I found a piece I had torn from another watercolor painting of mine and fit it to this study of values and shapes.

4. I added flowing ribbons in red, white, blue and green to form a mask.

5. In putting the final touches, I created "Return to Innocence."
