Hints for New Artists

As artists, in sharing our work with a world beyond our immediate selves, we become vulnerable to the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." Often our efforts are rewarded, and sometimes our efforts seem unappreciated. Whether we paint for ourselves, for family and friends, or in an attempt to communicate with a larger world, dare to be true to your own unique artistic voice. And always remember that it is the process, the journey of growth, that is important in life.

Always remember: It is the journey that is important. Make every moment a learning experience.

I have found that I learn more when I make mistakes, and I make lots of them.  If you "get it right" the first time you try something, do you really know why?  When I recognize a mistake, or have it pointed out to me, I learn for the next attempt.  And, sometimes a mistake leads to a new creative expression.  So, take chances. Have fun.

Taking workshops gives the artist a wonderful way to meet and to network with other artists and to learn new techniques.  Always remember, however, that when you incorporate someone else’s techniques into your own work, you want to “be yourself” and develop your own style, not to copy or mimic another artist.

In a workshop, unless the artist-teacher’s intent is for you to try new materials, use your favorite brushes and appropriate surfaces in a workshop.  You want to keep your focus on what is being taught, not fighting against unfamiliar or poor materials that will only frustrate you.

Once you have tried various brushes, paints, and work surfaces, choose the best materials that work for you.  Your goal should be to enjoy the process of creating and have some fun!
